Message	they hard? Cracked? Loose? (are you able to rotate them on their fittings) Check valves in those hoses been tested? Brake section in service manual has a procedure for doing this if I recall. I guess I would look at everything around the booster and replace as necessary before doing the booster, which as you mentioned is no fun. The clunking sound you describe is definitely not normal, but I don't really have any idea what that could be...
